  • 1 Paper towels For draining excess oil.

Ingredients

Onions

  • 2 large Fresh onions Choose large, sweet onions like Vidalia or yellow.

Batter

  • 1 cup All-purpose flour Base for the batter.
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder Helps the fritters rise.
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder Adds savory depth.
  • ½ teaspoon Salt Enhances flavor.
  • ¼ teaspoon Pepper Freshly ground for a kick.
  • 1 inch Vegetable oil For frying; use a neutral oil.
  • 1 serving Egg substitute Flaxseed meal mixed with water for vegan option.

Instructions

Prepare the Onions

  • Start by slicing 2 large fresh onions into thin rings. Soak in cold water for 15 minutes if a milder flavor is desired, then drain.

Mix the Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ¼ teaspoon of pepper. Stir until well mixed.

Create the Batter

  • Gradually add water to the dry mixture, stirring until you achieve a thick batter that coats the onions.

Heat the Oil

  • In a deep frying pan, heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Test readiness with a small spoonful of batter.

Fry the Fritters

  • Drop spoonfuls of the batter-coated onions into the hot oil. Fry in batches for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.

Drain and Serve

  • Remove fritters with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve warm for best flavor.
